Our open enrollment period is coming up and already there’s been massive changes. I’ll probably take catastrophic coverage and put more into a Flex Spending Account.
I sure wish my husband’s present employer had an HSA—I used to like the one we had at his previous employer; although I think I read that HSA’s were working too well and Obama did something to screw that up too. Maybe someone out there knows more about it. We’ve never used an FSA because normally we don’t have much in the way of health care costs (knock on wood). I liked the HSA because the money floated with us from year to year and even when he left the job.

We are in the middle of the budgeting process for 2011 and have been instructed by our employee benefits analyst to increase our expected benefit cost by 10.5%. I still recall a conversation at a conference last year where the speaker said, “If you think that health care is expensive now, just wait until it’s “free”.

Beginning in January, you can no longer use Flex money to purchase OTC drugs, unless you get a prescription from your doctor. Imagine having to ask your doctor for a prescription for Ibuprofen or Robitussin!
