The nose is so small and full of mucus, generally, wholly inadequate for the kind of breathing one finds comfortable during strenuous activity.

Actually, during strenuous activity, breathing through the nose is the best method to get the maximum amount of oxygen into the lungs.

That is why in the military they have you sing diddy's and jody calls (songs) while you are running and working out; it makes you breath in through the nose and out through the mouth.

Even when it's full of mucus? But seriously, how can the nose be the best method to get the maximum amount of oxygen? The mouth is a bigger passageway.
