appears that the economy had big enough shoulders to handle it for a long enough time. Certainly the Obama administration is doing everything in its power to remedy that.

this is a % based graph, those factors would not affect it.

One of my points is that no single person is to blame. Many Congresses, Presidents, and generations are responsible. But yes, notice the big jump in the last two years. Ever since the Democrats took Congress in 2007, Bush “worked with them,” and now Obama.

That chart is as a percentage of GDP. Inflation and population growth is already accounted for along with per capita growth in production.

Remember:

1. Way back, no social security, no welfare or unemployment benefits.

2. Way back, federal budgets did not have programs that mandated a certain amount be spent on them. everything was discretionary, and could be cut back or eliminated.

3. Way back, no huge government worker pensions. No guys retiring after 30 years and coming back the next day as a contrator at a higher rate of pay, to the same job.

Thanks for the reply. Guess I should have known as it is a percentage of GDP, but that’s why I come here, to converse with folks that are smarter than I am.

I noticed the jump in the last two years corresponds rougly to the jump during the last depression.

I guess I should have written “as a %age of GDP” in the article title and the text as I did in the chart title. I’ll take the blame for the confusion.
