BS. Burning a book about a theocratic form of government is NOT equal to building a victory monument close to the spot where 2,600 people were murdered by the same theocratic form of government.
Burning a book is a freedom of expression, just as writing a book is.
Not all books are equal. Some are useful and productive, some are evil and terrible for society.
At least in this country we allow books on all different religions. In islamic countries most do not allow bibles or churches and in fact burn bibles and churches and kill Christians. They routinely burn bibles when found. They are illegal to possess and people get beaten up and jail time for having them. They kill people who convert from islam to another faith. This is a one time event, the muslims do this as a matter and standing duty of sharia law.
One dinky church burning a koran in a tolerant country of 300+ million is hardly equal to what muslims do to other religions and other people of faith in islamic countries.
If anyone believes they are equal they are not living in the real world.
finally I do not have a problem with a pastor burning an evil book. I would not have a problem with him burning any evil books. Would we care if he burned a satanic bible by Anton LeVay? I wouldn’t. 1. Christians deal with offenses to their religion all the time without the world worrying they will become violent. Our government even FUNDS such garbage - like Maplethorpe and “Piss Christ” with the crucifix in the jar of urine. Muslims fake offense and scream about violence and being unable to control themselves - all this crap from the supposed ‘religion of peace’. Killing people for drawing Mohammed. Gimme a damn break.
2. Christians do not have a system in place to treat unbelievers as second class, force unbelievers to pay religious protection taxes, or deny unbelievers from certain jobs and government positions. Sharia law of the muslims does all this. Non-muslims are second class citizens, they have far less rights than muslims, they have to pay the jizya tax, they are denied certain jobs and government offices and may not be allowed in the military.
3. We tolerate nonbelievers in our country and let them practice their faith as long as it doesn’t violate our nations’ laws. Islamic states HAVE LAWS that do not allow bibles, other people’s religions being praticed in their lands, without legal and criminal penalties. They do not tolerate other religions well in their islamic states.
4. Christians do not go around in mobs hacking up muslims, screaming about “Death to - insert any islamic nation here” and burning mosques and korans. We don’t do this. Muslims around the world do.
5. Christians do not force anyone to convert to Christianity. We do not have a ‘convert or die’ mentality. This forced coercion does occur in islamic states. Regularly.
6. Christians do not kidnap muslims from their families and force them to convert and marry a muslim. This happens routinely in islamic countries to Christian families, with their daughters, in particular.
7. The timeline of the Bible goes from the Old Testament (living under the law) to the New Testament (living under grace and trying to keep the law as best as we can). We are living in an age where we proclaim God’s grace is available to all mankind, jew and gentile. The Koran, however, has the first half of their Surahs being nice and complimentary to jews and Christians, but the later Surahs becoming increasingly violent and deceptive towards jews and Christians. In the Koran, the later Surahs that contradict earlier Surahs on an issue take precedent - it is called “abrogation”. Basically the bible moves from the harshness of the law to God’s grace we are under now; the Koran goes from respecting jews and Christians (the people of the book) to killing those that will not convert and permitting deception of non-believers if it furthers islam.
