Big lead for GOP in Maine

To the list of states where things are looking dreadful for Democrats this fall you can add Maine: Republican Paul LePage leads Democrat Libby Mitchell 43-29 in PPP's first look at the race with independent Eliot Cutler pulling 11%.

This is the biggest lead for LePage that I've seen so far. And the margin over Mitchell seems about right. Give or take 5.

Maine isn't that Liberal, and it's been a long time since a Republican Governor.

LePage is doing much better in CD 2 than CD 1 LePage is up in CD 2 48-27.

Opportunity for Levesque? They say Michaud is wildly popular, but I don't get it. Michaud could lose.

Castle is being challenged in the state’s September 14 GOP primary by conservative activist Christine O’Donnell. Coons runs virtually even with O’Donnell who picks up 41% of the vote to the Democrat’s 39%.

Christine O'Donnell is trailing Rep. Mike Castle by only 2% among voters most likely to turnout in the Delaware Senate GOP primary, according to a Tea Party Express poll. The poll, obtained by Hotline On Call, found that among GOP voters who indicated they are most likely to vote -- or "10s" in polling lingo -- Castle leads O'Donnell 43% to 41%. The Tea Party Express released the top line of the poll on Thursday. That showed O'Donnell trailing Castle by nearly 6%, 43.7% to 38%. These new numbers suggest that Castle is significantly more vulnerable than originally believed.

Yup, I contributed before the primary. Voted for him. Will enthusiastically vote for him in November. Would contribute again, probably will. I think this is going to be a fairly big win for him. LePage has a lot of things going for him and not a lot against.

He was the tea party candidate, but there’s really nothing “extreme” about him. I picked him out of the 7 candidates as my favorite about 6 months before the primary, based not on a list of conservative positions, but on the simple idea that government does not create jobs. 7 Republican candidates and really, only Paul LePage took that position.
A simple, basic idea, not seen as extreme.

But in Maine, maybe elsewhere, there’s a tendency not to say “hey, were open for business, c’mon in” but an endless debate about what jobs Maine wants, and what government needs to do to get those jobs that we want. Lots of Government doing this, doing that, to get jobs or make jobs.

LePage understands that it’s not his job as Governor to pick out peoples jobs for them. Just make it easy for people who want to sell something to Mainers or make things in Maine to do that. The Maine Democrat way is to identify successful businesses and try to hurt them in some way. Too successful selling water? A new tax on bottling water. Thanks Poland Spring.

He has the type of resume that supports his general image as a competent guy who can fix the budgetary problems that we face and the economic problems caused by too much regulation. He’ll go in there, roll up his sleeves, find waste, or useless and or damaging programs, make cuts. Government employees might need to take pay cuts.

Nonideological for the most part. Unclear position on civil unions. Which is acceptable to the Conservatives and reassuring to others.

Is French Catholic. That’s a very good thing with certain demographics, especially in Lewiston / Auburn which is traditionally a Democrat area but is projected to go to LePage.

On the down side, he does have the tendency to occasionally put his foot in his mouth. But, I’m guessing that’s not going to matter. Some see that as part of his charm. Straight shooter.

That is not a surprise. CD1 elected Pingree-a moonbat if there ever was one. Portland is liberal. CD2, where I live has lots of Reagan Democrats.

I read a story about Paul LePage more than a year ago. He has a very interesting life story. I would vote for him. I hope my relatives in Maine do.

The DGA have put out one of the cheesiest scare ads I've seen in a long time against LePage. Stuff this bad will probably help LePage rather than hurt him.

I saw it on tv today, didn’t know it was out there. And yeah, it very much would work to LePage’s advantage.

LePage supports one reasonable method to reduce energy costs in Maine. Not only that, but his supports another reasonable method to reduce energy costs, even when the most expensive energy is available.

People know that now is the time to start getting lower energy costs to help the competitiveness of business in Maine. People know how expensive and unreliable wind power is. Some may like it no matter what, but large numbers of others understand that we can’t have the most expensive energy and still have jobs.

As a forty-year resident of Maine, I don’t expect having a Republican governor is going to change much. Even the business community (what there is of it) has long since become addicted to big government.
