Yet more proof that the guy has islamic roots - muslims typically shy away from dogs, seeing them as unclean.
I don't know of any American who would use this expression.

You often hear Americans say “work like a dog.” This denotes tremendous respect for the way a dog will keep at a task, dutifully, loyally, even when tired, to get it done.
