The L.A. Times has a heartwarming story of literary giant Ray Bradbury who at 90 is not afraid to tell everyone exactly what he thinks. A gathering of admirers got an earful of Bradburyisms on the verge of his Aug 22 90th birthday celebration in Los Angeles. Bradbury railed against the "too many machines" that we surround ourselves with, lamented that we hadn't colonized the moon by now, and said that the U.S. is in need of a revolution because "there is too much government today."
You have to hand it to this wizened sage. He hit the nail on the head with every statement. Bradbury is so right to point out that we are losing our American soul and character.
Here are his statements as reported by the Times:
- He (Obama) should be announcing that we should go back to the moon. We should never have left there. We should go to the moon and prepare a base to fire a rocket off to Mars and then go to Mars and colonize Mars. Then when we do that, we will live forever.
- I think our country is in need of a revolution. There is too much government today. We've got to remember the government should be by the people, of the people and for the people.
- We have too many cellphones. We've got too many Internets. We have got to get rid of those machines. We have too many machines now.
- I was approached three times during the last year by Internet companies wanting to put my books [E-book readers]I said to Yahoo, 'Prick up your ears and go to hell.'
Another of my favorite Bradbury quotes goes like this: "I dont believe in colleges and universities. I believe in libraries."
The man is clearly an individualist and not a collectivist...

Publishing power to the people is the yang of the Inet. It's the Inet's yin that troubles me. A strain of Bill Joy neo-Ludditism seems to have taken root in my subconscience. LOL.

Ray Bradbury is a wonder. He’s been a repeat guest on Barbara Simpson’s show on KSFO - he was very, very upset with Michael Moore’s double-cross when he produced the ripoff of Fahrenheit 451. He’s a good man.
