CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Processing errors at Army and Air Force Exchange Service operations worldwide in the past week have resulted in duplicate charges on credit and debit card transactions, AAFES reported Thursday.

“Shoppers who swiped their cards anytime between Aug. 7 and Aug. 9 at an AAFES facility are strongly encouraged to review their statements to see if they are impacted by this issue,” AAFES’ chief of staff, Col. Virgil Williams, said in a news release.

“If a customer finds a billing anomaly, no action will be required on their part as we’re working to correct inaccuracies on their behalf,” he said.

Information on the amount of money involved, how many customers might be affected and whether the glitch occurred with all types of credit and debit cards was unavailable early Friday from AAFES headquarters in Dallas.

The processing errors occurred at AAFES locations worldwide, including main exchanges, gas stations, food courts and the online store. Customers are urged to check their accounts to see if they have been affected.

It could take weeks for any corrective action to show up on a customer’s credit card account, AAFES said.

The exchange service said dozens of employees at its Information Technology and Finance and Accounting Teams are working around the clock to fix the problem.

“We’re putting all the resources we have towards doing the right thing for customers affected by this unfortunate turn of events,” said Williams, according to the release. “Our priority is to take corrective action as quickly as possible and return customers’ accounts to the exact state they were prior to this glitch.”

If you shopped recently at any AAFES establishments, check your statements.

Did it end up in anyone’s Cayman Island bank account?

They should double check things *themselves*. Why burden the consumer?

Nope. Just double charged for gas at Ft. Jackson and a double charge at the BX at Shaw. USAA noticed it as well and both were fixed instantly when I called USAA.

Good luck.

I've been involved in a simple lighting remodel project at a main exchange which has taken well over a year to get through the red-tape. Same project in the private sector. One week.

Why do computer glitches never result in getting charged half?

Actually, I was involved in one where some customers were never charged at all. The company didn't realize that it had happened for over a year (lack of internal audits) and it was kind of tricky to go back and ask for the money at that time.
