888WEBTODAY.COM (8-8-10)--A man died during the World Sauna Championship in Heinola, Finland after sustaining severe burns in the end phase of the event that required long term exposure to 230 degree temperatures (110 Celsius).
Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy (pictured on the left) was pronounced dead on August 7, 2010 after passing out from the 230 degree temperatures. Finland's Timo Kaukonen won the event. Not a big surpise since he was the reigning champ.
Almost 1,000 spectators watched as medical workers attended to both men who were badly burned. Timo Kaukonen is said to be in stable condition and probably willing to participate in the contest next year, except for one problem. The even has been called off--forever.

Too bad. Just as his career was getting red hot!
surprising it wasn’t on PPV in the states
probably would have made big bucks
“world sauna champianship” How does one train for that?
These guys are idiots. Don’t they realize that the boiling point is only 212 F?
An exerpt from Rick Reilly's book about extreme sports and he tried this one out..... excerpt follows. Read more at the link.
Now do it for 10 minutes or more, and that's what it's like to compete in quite possibly the world's dumbest sport: the Sauna World Championships.
I know. I entered.
End snip
These guys are idiots. Dont they realize that the boiling point is only 212 F?
Yes but they allow a mist of water on the contestants every 30 seconds. Provides for a slow boil I guess instead of a complete emersion..
If he hadn’t procreated then gene pool improves just a little more.
Pretty heated competition!
Boiled champppp?
I am in awe. This guy died in the ultimate quest - whimpy shower takers will never understand. Personally, I’ve never gone beyond about 180 or so. Nothing in the world is like a good flaming hot sauna and an ice water plunge done in cycles (increaasing benefit). Beats liquor all hollow and makes sex and sleep afterwards the stuff of pure legend.
Couln’t agree more. I can go dry heat 220 for short periods, but throw water on the stove and I’m crawling out.
As I was taught by a Yupik friend in Western Alaska, a roll in the snow several cycles is a real rush.
Another huge benefit is a sauna’s ability to drive sickness right out of the body by perspiration, the heat itself killing the virus, and as you mentioned the incredible sleep that follows!
Dying in a sauna competition. Only thing worse would be expiring in the middle of a tiddly winks match.
Damn, I was in training for next year and was just getting warmed up............
A dry 220 might be possible for me (never done it and I stand in awe), but the 180 is wet. My Finnish wife had to be taught how to take a real sauna and she’s taken them with family and relatives all her life. Ethnic traditions seem to lose something in crossing the Atlantic. My young started in a Kitchenmaid tub full of water set on the floor of the sauna for a cycle or two. Living out in the sticks now and looking forward to a roll in the snow . . . anddd then in the hay.
after sustaining severe burns in the end phaseOw.
Thank you for removing your genes from the gene pool. (Although a REAL pool would have come in handy.)
