Everything that Lindsey (Lohan) Graham does has an ulterior motive. That sleezeball could teach Machiavelli a thing or two.

I think there is a plot going on and it goes something like this. Graham is of course trying to get votes with his conservative voters. But at the same time, he is sabotaging the immigration issue because he knows that it will be take too long and be very difficult to get 2/3 of the states to pass such as ammendment. There are easier ways to address the 14th Amendment problem by congress simply passing legislation without going for the amendment. Graham is trying to sidetrack the birthright citizenship effort by actually making it harder than it needs to be and eventually sabotaging it. I think he is doing this in conjuction with the Democrats. No doubt they have worked out a deal with him.

It would depend on the exact wording of any proposed amendment. Can't tell intentions until you see the exact wording.

It is also possible that they are just trying to use this issue as a political wedge against the Democrats and to stir up anger in the base so that they will come out en masse to vote Republican. This is probably all posturing.

There is more to the natural born clause than just checking any possible loyalties of birth as the article suggests. Even if a person is loyal to the US, if they are not a natural born citizen, then they still might have relatives in another country whose safety could be used to coerce the president to do what they want. And that is only one of the very real dangers. The founders were wise and they knew exactly what they were doing putting that clause in there.

In any case, on the off chance that these politicians are seriously concerned with ending anchor babies and the welfare of the country, then they ought to ban dual citizenship in this country while they're at it. If a country grants its citizenship to an individual without any solicitation act of the individual, then they should be required to renounce it within X number of years (or by their 21st birthday if they're a minor) to the country that granted it by their 21st birthday. If they don't they should be banned from ever holding high level government office.

Since most acts of citizenship take place when a person becomes of voting age, which at one time was NOT synonymous with the age of military service, I do not see the need for the 14th Amendment. I would have a piece of legislation in place, that demands that if one DESIRES to be a citizen, they must earn it. No more free pass on being a citizen, with no clue or desire to provide their half of the unspoken contract, i.e., we trained and educated you, now it’s your turn to produce. In such, the individual might just learn what they have, and be better edged to protect, unlike half of these college youths, that would gladly ‘whiz’ on the next returning GI.
