...Why no mention of African birth through the late 80’s and early 90’s when he was trying to develop a black identity?

Maybe because that would have made him a KENYAN and NOT an AFRICAN-AMERICAN, because it was an AFRICAN-AMERICAN IDENTITY he was 'TRYING TO DEVELOP'.

He was already black, after all.
