A Department of Revenue spokesman said Kerry would be liable for Massachusetts taxes if he berthed the boat in the Bay State within six months of its purchase. If the Isabel were brought to Massachusetts after that period, the state would have to decide if it wanted to pursue the taxes. Massachusetts, like most other states, has been grappling with plunging tax revenues. Last year's budget deficit was $600 million, and officials are bracing for a $1 billion deficit this year.
The Republicans of Massachusetts spoke out meekly to criticize Kerry's cost saving measures.
"While we can fault the senator for his hypocrisy on taxes or having his boat built halfway around the world instead of here in the USA, John Kerry proves an important point that taxes in Massachusetts are too high. If they are too high for someone as rich as Senator Kerry, they are absolutely too high for working-class taxpayers who are being squeezed at every turn," said a statement issued by party Chairwoman Jennifer Nassour.

Hopefully people vote to lower the Mass State tax to 3% when it comes up again. Every time this comes up the stupid liberal taxachusetts voters vote to keep the tax. We could have gotten rid of the 5% state tax last year, however, it did not get enough votes so the latest on the table is to lower it from 5% to 3%.

If I ever get a godzillianaires widow hypnotized into stealing from her real husband's children, I'll at least have her get me a boat with a motor.

Why would Kerry care? As someone pointed out on a related thread, it’s not his money, it’s his second wife’s first husband’s money.

It’s a beautiful boat, but it’s hard to see how it’s wide or deep enough for two master cabins and a bar, or how you can pack $7 million into it. I also wonder what high end sailing vessels like that have for motors, and how many people it takes to sail it. Mostly I just think it’s wasted on a twit like Mr. Heinz, who’s never worked a day in his life.

I can't help but wonder: Is there a law against paying more taxes than one owes? I don't think there is. So, assuming that there isn't such a law, there's no reason that someone who supports increasing taxes shouldn't voluntarily overpay their own tax obligation. For example, John Kerry should direct his accountant to make sure that John (and his family) overpay whatever tax they do owe and then pay every tax and fee they would owe if they didn't have an accountant and tax lawyer helping them find loopholes in the tax law. John Kerry and every other Democrat should direct their accountants, tax lawyers, TurboTax software, etc. to find the highest tax and then pay it.
