Apple finally caught up with Microsoft in their software development lifecycle.
"Let the consumer perform beta testing"
There is a Droid in my near future. Still deciding whether to get an HTC or Motorola X.
Answer: because those "market share" figures are for Linux server licences sold. Microsoft doesn't count them - and because the market research companies can't count them - if money doesn't change hands. True, this indicates that companies selling Linux servers (principally hardware) aren't making headway against Windows Server. But what it doesn't tell you is what progress Linux is making overall on the web. For that, you need Netcraft. And that suggests that Linux has a really big market share.
Certainly, Microsoft's Windows Server business is holding up well, judging by the profit figures. But you won't find any small web startup using it; and (Update: @QuantumWaveFunction in the comments says they do.) You won't find any big web company using it, except Microsoft (update: and, obviously, eBay - as above). I once asked Google's open source advocate, Chris Di Bona, how much it would cost Google to run on Windows Server. He laughed a long time.

“I believe those percentages are misleading in that they only apply to licenses where money changed hands, so the number of Linux servers is hugely higher than that. “
Could be but the source I used indicated it was based on web sites and not on revenue. Further some servers are certainly not available to the internet to respond to such queries.
True. I’m trying to find something from Netcraft, but all I can find are numbers for Apache vs other web servers.
I’m in the hosting market and it is literally insane to me to think that the Linux numbers could be that low. EVERY major company runs Linux. Even MS uses Linux servers. The numbers for Apache are through the roof vs IIS, but of course Apache is cross-platform, so that doesn’t clear anything up. So strange...
I don’t have a big ax to grind with MS, but I’d never run a Windows server. An Exchange Server, sure. But for web applications or web sites? Not in a billion years.
Inertia. And that number is in decline.
Here are two of the sources I found.

If you base it on revenue then Linux and Unix jump up but its still not a clear picture as far as I can tell.
“Inertia. And that number is in decline. “
True it is on the decline with Linux taking up a larger percentage. Mac hasn’t really grown that much so its not responsible for the decline.
Even accepting the inertia should tell us something. Microsoft has been the market leader for years and years. If you believe in the free market that should mean something.
Yes they’ve played dirty on occasion, as has every big company out there. Look at all the lawsuits Apple is currently involved in.
Yeah, and in 1920, something like 75% of the cars on the road on earth were Model T’s. Great success story. Capitalism in action. But as time went on and people wanted something better, like a car with a gas gauge instead of a dip stick, Ford’s market share eroded. They kept cutting prices but in the end they couldn’t give them away. Today if you see one on the road it’s a curiosity.
I’m sorry to say that Windows Mobile on an HTC phone (AT&T Tilt first, which was kind of okay, then a Touch Pro that was a disaster) is what sent me into a fit of rage that resulted in purchasing my first iPhone.
Inexplicable battery life problems, phone freezes in the night causing missed alarms in the morning, missed text messages, and the LAG!! ARGH! I’m getting upset just thinking about it...lol
With WinMo, you can do just about anything, but it’s complicated as hell to set it up the way you want it. Far more complicated than it should be, IMHO. Honestly, jailbreaking the iPhone is a heck of a lot easier than setting up a WinMo phone.
There really hasn’t been a device that did all basic business features I wanted perfectly out of the box since the Treo 600. And even that required a 3rd party email app to function as I wanted it to.
The only thing I miss about WinMo is PhoneAlarm. Apple would do well to add the profiling capability from that to iOS. Though, I believe there is a company offering something similar in one of the jailbreak app stores. I haven’t tried it yet.
As with most technology products... Never buy the first version of anything. It will all be fixed when the iPhone 4.1 comes out. I can wait a year. My two year old iPhone is working great.
And in 2010 92 percent of the computers are Microsoft. And the world wide standard for document editing is micrsoft word.
People want something cheaper, and thats Linux.
BTW Ford is still around and they are still a leader in the car industry.
Here are the Netcraft numbers:

It’s surprising to me that Windows does that well, but it’s closer to what’s in the realm of believability.
I am on vacation and taking glorious photos and videos everywhere I go. Sitting on a rock in a creek right now, wish I could instantly post a photo. I have stopped carrying another camera. This rocks. Hd in my pocket.
I have had zero trouble with my new iPhone 4. I love it. But I do not care for videophoning or taking pics of myself so I’ve got that going for me!
I don’t know about the HTC, but most (if not all) of the Motorola Droid chips are made in the USA.
Great to know!
I’m biased. My company makes chips, and Motorola is our biggest customer. So go out there and buy! LOL!
Oh, BTW, I own a Moto Droid, and I like it. I’d recommend it even if I didn’t have anything to do with its manufacture.
My new every two isn't up until the end of August. So by then, the Droid X will be out. Heard its pretty big, though. But it will def. be a Motorola Droid. The Incredible doesn't have a slider, and I'm so tired of typing on the screen.
