iOS 4 vs Android 2.2 - Fight: The two leading operating systems go toe to toe
Pocket-Lint ^ | 24 June 2010 | Stuart Miles

We've analysed whether the HTC Desire is better than the iPhone 4 but what about the two operating systems that power these leading mobiles? Does iOS 4 from Apple really pack a punch when it comes to smartphone supremacy, or is the real champion Google's Android OS? We look at the key areas of each OS to find out which truly is king of the ring.

...

The functionality, flexibility and fun of Android 2.2 simply leaves iOS 4 in its dust. It might not be as straight forward, it might be easier to throw off kilter, it might not even be quite as smooth running but it keeps you interested in your mobile phone and all the magic it can perform for longer.

A thought occurred to me today as I was listening to Rush talk about Kagan, and politics in general. In some ways, the iPhone is much like the approach of Demorats: give a hand out. You only get what Apple has approved, and they fight mightily hard to keep you on the plantation, only living with their handouts.

Android, on the other hand, is much like the conservative position: a hand up. Sure, you can get things spoon-fed to you if you need it, but ultimately the entire power of the phone is at your disposal, to customize, build, and use as you want, to your benefit. Android won't restrict you, doesn't fight you to open your phone for your uses.

Restricted garden with over-protective nanny or the-world-at-your-feet with you the master of your own destiny? That's iOS versus Android.

The iOS4 is not ready for primetime. Applications freeze or sometimes don’t load completely. It is slow too.
I cannot freep as fast as I used to.
I have an iphone 3G.

Thumbs down to Apple.

You mean they enabled flash?

The proven reliability of the itouch I been using for a year, or an outfit that knowingly, until just recently, colluded with Red China to feed fiction to their users in that police state.

Ask.com instead of google. Doesn’t make my stomach churn to use it.

You do realize your iTouch was built at Foxconn in Shenzhen.

China.

Don’t you?

There’s also been reports of much short-than-normal battery life, have you seen that?

It may all be related to Apple’s attempt to shoehorn multitasking into the OS...

Other than the ethical problems with paying workers a pittance, what wrongdoing are you alleging apple is guilty of?

I do not think so. I am not sure.
I am still using the same two third party ones before the upgrade. Even the ones that came with the operating system are troublesome.

Battery life is a little shorter. I use a lot and have it plugged it in now to charge. :(

When I’m stationary for any length of time, I leave it plugged in. Shoulda been done long ago.

I just got the Sprint EVO. There is 1 thing I don’t like. Making phone calls. I would like to highlight the caller and press call. Not touch the caller and have it make the call. Other than that it is OK.

Why would you have even upgraded a 3G to IOS4? Seriously, this phone doesn’t have the processor speed to effectively run IOS4.. will it run? Yes, just like you can run Windows 7 in 256meg or Ram.. but I wouldn’t recommend it.

If you aren’t on a 3GS phone or better, you were foolish to put IOS4 on your phone.

That’s just reaility.

The sheer absurdity of the above sentence is mind boggling.. Droid wins, but it not as smooth running, it flakes out more often, its not as easy to use.. but it still wins?

Be serious, that's double speak that even Fauxbama wouldn't utter.

I loved it.

I don't have either phone, but need to check out an Android based phone because of it's 'longer-lasting magic dust' that it dropped iOS in...

Now that Android is allowing Google to remove apps from your phones (or, is it 'their' phone), does that make them rinos instead of true conservatives? Seriously, that was an awesome comparison. These cult wars can bring out the 'best' in people...

I am no fan of apple, but as someone who has used, worked and programmed both phones, Droid is without question the second tier product.

Doesn’t mean the Apple product is perfect, but it is head and shoulders above Droid at this point and time.

You're the one that said Google colluded with "Red China". They pulled out of China. Here, try going to the Chinese site for Google (Google.cn). Google now redirects you to Hong Kong.

And you don't pay money to Google for using their website. I know I don't give them a penny.

But when you buy an iTouch, some of your money goes straight from your pocket right to the Chinese government.

Seems if you're concerned about any "support" for the Chinese government, you should avoid buying any products made in China. Like your iTouch.

Interesting! On my WinMo phone when I touch a contact (picture or text) it brings up the ways I can contact them - e-mail, SMS, all their phone numbers. Touch one of the listed contact methods and that app (dialer, SMS, e-mail) pops up.

Now, not having an Android phone myself (just played with one for a while), maybe Contacts Blast would work for you?

Because you can actually make your phone do what YOU want, you don't have to learn how to do things the way the phone wants.

It's a person-centric approach, rather than a phone-centric approach. The phone should change to your needs, not the other way around.
