On CNN’s ‘Reliable Sources,’ Rolling Stone’s Michael Hastings responds to Bill O’Reilly calling him a ‘far-left critic.’ O’Reilly brought to light Hastings’ criticism of Republicans, including his calling Rudy Giuliani a “maniac.” Hastings said, “If Bill O’Reilly is calling you a ‘far-left critic,’ in my book no matter what your political persuasion is, that probably means you’re doing a good job.”

I had a recurring fantasy in which I took him out during a press conference (it was nonlethal, just something that put him out of commission for a year or so), saving America from the horror of a President Giuliani. it was easy to despise Rudy. I’d spent two years covering the war in Iraq. I had a brother who was currently deployed there as an infantry platoon leader, and I had Iraqi friends who were now living as refugees. To listen to a man so casually invoke violence and warfare—a man who’d never set foot in Iraq or in any war zone—was troubling indeed. I wasn’t alone in the press corps. I don’t think I spoke to another journalist who ever said one good thing about the man. What did we say? We made fun of his divorces and his wives, that he’d married a second cousin, that he surrounded himself with corrupt cronies, that he had a piss-poor relationship with his children, etc. We talked about his megalomania and his cynical exploitation of September 11.

Her friend Lindsay is probably not going to recommend Rolling Stone interviews to her business and political associates either.
Michael, you child. Rudy was in a war zone on September 11, 2001. His alternate command center was in the World Trade Center. He watched people jump to their deaths.
You are a biased, pompoused, ass. The fact your brother is in the Army only means your brother is 100 times the man you will ever be. It does not make you a better man. The fact you went as a reporter to Baghdad, and holed up in the Green Zone does not make you a warrior. The fact you fell in love with a socialist Air America reporter who decided to work for the socialist National Democratic Institute in Iraq and was later killed in an ambush does not make you better than the people you write about.
Michael, wisdom comes from how we react to, and learn from, experiences. It does not come from simply experiencing the experiences.
His “good job” just made it impossible for his colleagues to do theirs. They’ll be luck to talk to a pr hack from now on.
