The Circle Island tour boats were a favorite when I lived in CT several years ago. Haven't read thru the posts so it may have been recommended. This is something you should do early on when visiting Manhattan ... as the onboard tour directors are thorough in giving you a great overview of Manhattan ... which allows you to pick and choose what points you want to spend time visiting.
