It seems you can’t navigate the Internet without bumping into an Obama-Jimmy Carter comparison. There’s something in the air that smells distinctly like peanuts.
WHAT’S THE MATTER?
It’s the late ’70s all over again–and there’s a familiar smell in the presidential air.
No, it’s not weakness–though that’s a part of the fragrance.
It’s the smell of peanuts–as in those long forgotten four years of the Jimmy “Mr. Peanut” Carter’s presidency.
Apologizing for American power, sucking up to enemies, dumping on allies, cluelessness and naivety; an economy that’s stuck on stupid with coming tax hikes and regulations: all of these have been making a comeback not seen since Jimmy Carter’s 1976-80 years.
Shouldn’t be long now before the return of the “Misery Index” (unemployment + inflation) and “stagflation.”
Others have noticed lately.

This is causing the public to revisit concerns it’s had about Mr. Obama since he clinched the Democratic nomination in March 2008. Then the ABC/Washington Post Poll reported that 46% of Americans found him too “inexperienced” to be an effective president, the highest number ever for a major party presidential nominee. In October, just before the election, ABC/Washington Post asked the question again: 44% called Mr. Obama too inexperienced. On issue after issue, Mr. Obama is providing plenty of evidence to validate those concerns.
Americans might hope the president’s diffidence when it comes to the hard work of government might mitigate his more extreme liberal tendencies. No such luck. Mr. Obama is an odd mixture of passivity and radicalism. He’s happy to be a cheerleader for policies (like nationalizing health care) that many Americans find dangerously liberal.
The country has had another president both weak and radical at the same time: Jimmy Carter.
Weak, Radical, Clueless and Naive.
Sounds like the law firm for Obama after completed his four-year plan for the mismanagement of America, home and abroad.

The president seemingly aligned with all the big boogiemen of the day — big business and big government.
The change agent personified the establishment. The post-partisan went to the mat for a hyper-partisan issue. The candidate who won his majority with the recession, focused his mandate elsewhere. The man who promised new politics partook in the ugly politics of old, from healthcare’s Cornhusker kickback to the Joe Sestak incident. And now, the competent candidate haunted by perceptions of incompetent presidential leadership.
Somewhere, along the way, was Obama’s Bert Lance affair. Jimmy Carter’s budget director was legally exonerated from a financial scandal. But the issue was ethics. Critical weeks passed. Amid Watergate’s shadow, the candidate who ran on good ethics was now a president tainted by bad ethics.
The hostage crisis cemented what began with Lance. But it’s also how the hostage crisis bled on. Like George H.W. Bush’s recession. And like too many of Obama’s crises. Healthcare bleeds for a year. The jobs crisis still bleeds. Now this oil crisis, bleeding past day 50.
And just like Jimmy Carter, Who’s afraid of Barack Obama? Nobody:
Fear-mongering and skillfully using fear are not the same thing. Other Presidents knew this. Gerstein mentions FDR, Ronald Reagan and Lyndon Johnson. But increasingly, presidential historians and political pundits are comparing Obama to Jimmy Carter – hardly good news for a President who has a lot yet to do and a reelection looming.
One can’t turn a pixel on the Internet without bumping into an Obama-Carter comparison it seems.

So 1979 followed two years of Carteresque utopian proclamations. Do we remember them all still? There was Cy Vance, in perfect aristocratic style, and in perpetual atonement for his earlier support of the Vietnam War, with his creased brow and sermonizing tone, bringing in the kinder, gentler order. He resigned over the failed hostage rescue, replaced by a stoic Ed Muskie. And there was Andrew Young at the UN trying to be a sort of proto-Barack Obama, reaching out to the radical Palestinians, and so on.
Remember the commandments? No more inordinate fear of communism; human rights governing U.S. foreign policy; no more nuclear weapons housed in South Korea which was to be free of U.S. troops; outreach to the terrorist/rebel/reformer Mugabe, and so on.
But VDH is not finished!
In other words, it took a flawed world about 24 months to size up the new idealistic administration, and to determine that it either could not or would not continue U.S. foreign policy of the previous three decades. Soon the more daring then decided to make “regional adjustments.” Finally a panicked Carter was attempting everything from boycotting the Olympics and arming Islamists in Afghanistan to threatening to use nuclear weapons in the Middle East and restoring draft registration to reclaim lost U.S. deterrence.
Here we go again…
Obama started out in similar fashion with his first al-Arabiya interview. Then followed the apology tour, the bowing, the Cairo myth-making speech, the reach out to Ahmadinejad, Assad, Castro, Chavez, and Putin, the estrangement with Israel, the neglect of the brave Iranian dissidents, the phony deadlines over Iranian proliferation, the missile defense walk-back from the Poles and Czechs, the constant Bush-bashing reset-button diplomacy rhetoric, the serial humiliation of things British, the failed deal to appease Putin in hopes of Russian help in stopping Iran from going nuclear, the new loud commitment to the UN, the promises to end all nuclear weapons, the nuke deal with Russia that saw us give up sophisticated weapons to match dismantling of poorer Russian models—all amid a backdrop of massive U.S. spending and the highest two budget deficits in American financial history.
One thing that’s remained un-commented on: Barack Obama has somehow managed in 16 months to combine the fecklessness and naivety of Jimmy Carter with the self-serving, mendacious domestic hackery of Bill Clinton.
That’s no small accomplishment.
How did America elect another unknown, inexperienced Democrat politician to run the country into a economic and foreign policy ditch? It’s been the template for Democrat presidential success–such as it is–since 1976: nominate someone without much of a track record on the national scene and let the Chummy Chumps in the Mainstream Media write the narrative.

When the Democrat presidential candidate lacks character, as Bill Clinton’s numerous extramarital affairs and the subsequent lies demonstrated, the Mainstream Media will insist that “Character doesn’t matter.”
When the Democrat candidate lacks experience, as Jimmy Carter, but especially Barack Obama did, the Mainstream Media will insist that “Experience doesn’t matter.”
Or, the MSM meme will be “It’s time for an outsider.” ‘Outsider’ being MSM-speak for “having no experience, but he’s a Democrat.”
Thank goodness the only thing that will save the MSM is an Obama bailout.
Everyone knows how those have turned out thus far.
The country’s hope for salvation spring from praying that when it comes to turning the MSM into the State Media, Obama’s continued incompetence-in-managing-anything streak will hold.
It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing. In the meantime, we’re all stuck with a Peanut Reprise–sponsored by the fast-fading Mainstream Media organizations.
That’s it: the smell in the air is definitely peanuts–with just a whiff of MSM death.

I think we will survive, barely, as Obama learns each day that China, Iran, Russia, Syria, and Turkey do not behave like professors at Columbia, the law school dean at Harvard, or the community activist board in Chicago.
Note the adverb “barely.”
