I never said Bush should have been in New Orleans on Monday. However, it would have helped if he had been in say Hattiesburg or Jackson as it came in.
New Orleans is not the end all be all of Katrina. New Orleans became a disaster solely because the levees broke.
I’m referring to the fact that this was the first storm in a long time that I can remember where they didn’t have aid stations up the day after.
Hate to say this but New Orleans was a disaster long before the storm hit.

Regarding him setting up shop in Hattiesburg or Jackson, the eye of that storm went right in between those two cities on Monday. Winds were right at 100 mph when it passed. That's not a place the President of the United States needs to be if it can be helped. Where do you shelter Air Force One, or the transport jet? (I'm asking because I don't know. I'm not that familiar with the landing strips in those 2 cities.) What happens if the President needs to be evacuated? That's just not a place the president needs to be. Focus needed to be on the storm, not on dealing with the president setting up shop in the middle of the hurricane path.
