Sarah Palin: Coach Wooden’s Parquet Success – a Blueprint for Life
Citizen Palin 4 President ^ | Sarah Palin On Facebook

“Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.” - Coach John Wooden

Ever since we were kids, Todd and I have looked at Coach John Wooden as a true hero. His quotes plastered our bulletin boards, school notebooks, and locker doors. Realizing this mutual admiration of Coach Wooden when Todd and I first met about 30 years ago was a sure sign that we were on the same page.

From afar we have admired Coach’s wit and wisdom, we’ve absorbed his writings and the life lessons he’s taught from the basketball court. Coach’s “Pyramid of Success” is a blueprint that everyone in this country should tack within eyesight and try to follow daily. Coach teaches: “Material possessions, winning scores, and great reputations are meaningless in the eyes of the Lord, because He knows what we really are and that is all that matters,” but I admit I fail that material possession lesson as I prize a favorite one that’s displayed in our living room – a genuine autographed copy of his Success Pyramid.

At least they rejected Bobby Knight, and the likes of Steve Fisher and Bill Frieder.

At least they rejected Bobby Knight ...

Bobby Knight's players loved him and nearly all graduated the real way. It was the liberal media who objected to his hard-ass style.

BK was out of control in public and clearly not a viable role model, especially at the end. Kind’a the Woody Hayes of BB.

Makes you wonder what they put in the water in Columbus back then.

I remember getting home from work one day long ago, and sat down to turn on the end of a bowl game.

It was close when I turned it on, one team was driving to come from behind, when suddenly a linebacker from the other team comes up with the ball and starts running the ohter way.

Out of the sidelines some guy with out football pads comes from nowhere, tackles the guy and starts hitting him.

I couldn't believe what was happening live in front of my eyes.

That they revere this nut job in Columbus to this day doesn't say much for them.......

It’s a shame Woody went out that way.

I actually do think highly of Woody. He actually was a very patriotic, conservative Republican who actually taught History at Ohio State, because it was a subject he was very passionate about.

And say what you will about Bobby, despite his flaws, he taught his players discipline, and many of his players grew up without a father figure, and he made solid citizens (Isiah Thomas notwithstanding), out of most of the guys who played for him.

Woody Hayes was another who got a bad rap He responded to an unsportsman-like conduct on the sidelines by a punk opposing player and he got canned instead of the kid. That was the beginning of PC taking over our society. We did not benefit from it.

Woody had anger issues on the sidelines and should have been removed long before he was.

Whether he had anger issues or not, same with Bobby Knight, they were great coaches who had a very strong character building effect on their players as well as winning records. You don’t end up with winning records by abusing your kids. You don’t continually recruit top players if you abuse the ones you have.

It was the media and a few fans, and folks like you, who objected, not the players. There are always people who can do it better from their arm chairs than the ones in the heat of battle. Speaking of battle, this argument reminds me of our present ROI in our fight against terror. We have to defeat the enemy without hurting or embarrassing him.

Here’s the youtube of it.

Hayes was, IMHO, getting senile. He’d been losing control on the sidelines for a while. There was another incident a little earlier where he got mad and tore up the sideline marker.

Bob Knight and John Wooden had a lot in common.

Their differences were a matter of style.

Neither was a hypocrite.

John Wooden imposed his will in the most subtle manner, while Bob Knight imposed his will confrontationally and in your face.

But their successes and their place in the history of this peculiarly American game called basketball is indisputable.

Bob Knight was a teacher that taught the hardest lesson of all, do as I say not as I do.

Bill Walton’s, Kareem’s, and Walt Hazzard’s lives after basketball were not failures, but all in all, neither were Bob Knight’s guys like Steve Green.
