A neat little twist in the McGinniss/Palin FenceGate saga….. Eric Boehlert at the allegedly objective MediaMatters fancies he has landed a telling blow against Sarah Palin when he reveals that the place next door was for several years a halfway house for recovering drug addicts and alcoholics.

Halfway houses are not all the same. If they are solid, run by people with serious sobriety and well managed, the residents will be model neighbors.

Just around the corner from me, there was for years a large AA meeting in a home owned by a local church. I'm sure passing motorists were sometimes taken aback, in this rapidly gentrifying neighborhood, by the large crowd of somewhat rough looking characters, mostly male and mostly black, loitering outside before and after meetings. But the truth is, there is no safer place in Washington, D.C. or any other major city than the street outside an AA meeting that is letting out.

Until 2007, the house operated as a way station for recovering drug addicts. Catherine Taylor, who inherited the house decades ago, said the Palins never complained about the recovering drug addicts and ex-cons who lived next door., but now an undesirable neighbour has moved in.

I was amazed to read blog comments on WaPo and Politico sites suggesting how awful it was that Palin only put up the fence during the reporters tenure, when they had *gasp* former druggies living next door. Must have been in a Center for American Progress talking points memo.

All I could think is how desperate they are as it illustrates how tolerant the Palin’s are towards those who have paid their debt to society.
