It was the lack of flags that got people wondering about other stuff.

There are usually flags in the press room, even when Obama speaks.
Oh, please. Presidents very seldom make an appearance in the press room. That's the place for their spokesperson to talk.
Also, there are not "usually flags in the press room". While I've seen a lot of pictures of the press room, I have yet to see one with a flag displayed. Perhaps you'd like to post a link to one since they're usually there. (The only case where I think that there might be one brought in would be if the president were to make a pre-planned visit there.)
