North Korea has deployed about 50,000 commandos along the inter-Korean border in an apparent show of force with the threat of rapid infiltration "suicide missions" against South Korea, a military source in Seoul said.
The North "has completed the frontline deployment of seven light infantry divisions over the past two or three years," the source said, citing a joint study by South Korean and U.S. militaries. Each division consists of about 7,000 troops.

“The special squad of suicide commandos is given higher priority in the case of war,” the source said. The number of the North's lightly-equipped special troops who focus on swift infiltration to strike U.S. and South Korean forces from behind has recently increased by 50 percent to 180,000.
Seoul's Defense Ministry refused to confirm the existence of the joint study, but did not deny the forward deployment of the special forces, saying the threat of infiltration by North Korean special forces "has become real."
"We will boost defense posture against the infiltration of North Korean special forces," the official said.
The North appears to have developed new strategies to complement its shortfalls and reinforce its strengths by examining the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, officials said. Among other things, the commandos might use Iraqi-style roadside bombs, they said.
The North's special forces can be deployed behind South Korean military lines by using radar-evading Antonov AN-2 transport planes, helicopters, submersibles and hovercrafts.
