I still think he should have taken care of the soldiers in the field first.

He did and he was still taking care of them at home and could still be if your Usurper in Chief would just produce his bona fides.

He has stated that he is willing to go to Afghanistan or wherever -- but only under a legal order, an order from a legal Article II Commander in Chief.

Is that asking too much from the supposed leader of a Constitutional Republic???

The man is intelligent enough to know what is probably going to happen, so I believe yes, it is too much to ask in this case. I think he should be in the field where the army needed him in the first place, otherwise, they wouldn’t have issued his orders.
