I think there’s opportunity here for someone to start a “home security consultant” business.

It would involve inspecting the house and its occupants, correcting any serious security deficiencies, helping the occupants buy weapons they are comfortable with, as well as training them with their use, the law, and the philosophy of use. That is, tactics.

Then they could do a risk assessment of the neighborhood, figure out estimated response time of the police, even help set up a block watch, or at least a phone directory of all the neighbors.

It might even include things like fire safety and disaster preparedness and response.

In that same vein, there are a few things one can do besides guns.

The wasp spray that shoots a stream 25 feet is more effective than mace, inside a house.

A canned air screamer (like yacht clubs use) is disorienting inside a house when pointed toward an intruder.

A one-million candle power light can disorient an intruder in a dimly lit home.

Every bedroom should have a fire extinguisher--not just in the kitchen and garage, to help get out in an emergency.

Even a squirt bottle with straight bleach in it can slow an intruder by searing their vision.

And finally, a door jamb can buy you precious seconds if an intruder is determined to get to you upon breaking in. For that reason, at least one room in your home should be the designated 'retreat and defend' room, where weaponry and door jammers and a fire extinguisher should be kept.

Bring your car keys and cell phone to the bedroom at night, every night.
