The author appears befuddled as to why the Tea Party conservatives aren't swallowing the usual progressive blame game. It isn't actually all that difficult to understand, because it's being shouted from the rooftops: government spending, already out of control under Bush, has mushroomed to the point where the country faces generations of crippling debt. It isn't the KKKorporations, it's the government feeding them. Government is increasingly large, increasingly intrusive, increasingly dictatorial, and increasingly driven by a smothering and ill-guided ideology. This isn't difficult.

Everything else that he finds inexplicable is so because it's a comfortable accusation intended to create a public image for the Tea Parties that is not founded on the above: that its adherents are racist, paranoid, that its motivation is a fear of white people becoming a minority, of economic uncertainty, of watching an old world trampled under the inexorable progress of history. All of that is crap. So long as he insists on it as a premise he will never understand what's going on. And so long as he clings to his psychoanalytical approach to what he clearly regards as a mental pathology, not politics, he might as well not try.
