When my computer attempts updates, I get the Error Code 8000FFFF.
It means that registry values are blocking all updates.
There is a Fix It link for this but I am so skeptical because I do not understand how to correct such problems.
If you have had this problem and have downloaded the fix for this, can you let me know if it fixes this on its own?
I fixed all of my Vista problems permanently, by installing Windows 7 on my laptop...
This is the first problem I have had. I am just skeptical to download the fix which says to run and follow the wizard. I am afraid I might get stuck!
It sounds like you’re stuck already.
Yep, because I am hesitant to download and follow instructions. I cannot believe it could be that easy.
Take that error code and type it into a search at bing.com.
Then look to see if anyone had any problems installing the update.
You might also try searches with the words “problem” or “fail” or something similar.
See if anyone else had the same issue.
Well, you could edit the registry by hand, but if you’ve never done that, you can easily mess stuff up. That’s why people like MS bundle up changes to the registry in small apps they ask people to download and run.
However, virus or other malware could be involved here somewhere.
I checked for malware and viruses and got nothing but I will have to do a full scan just to make sure.
I got brave and tried the automatic fix for this problem but it did not work. I still get the same error message.
I am in no way comfortable doing things with the registry, etc.
Are you using an account with proper permissions?
Go buy an upgrade to Windows 7. Backup all your data (word processor documents, pictures, etc.). Install Windows 7. You can do an upgrade that does not wipe out all your software and data. Or you can choose to reformat and install a fresh copy.
Windows 7 is much better than Vista.
Yep, am using with proper permissions.
Sounds like you’re not running these fixes as the administrator. Unless you’re in the Administrators group, you can’t modify the registry which is strange since the Windows Update service usually runs with administrative privileges.
I would run MalWareBytes and CCleaner to make sure your machine isn’t compromised and do a little more research on Bing/Google for answers. Hex codes usually aren’t thrown unless a memory fault has occurred, and that’s unusual with updates.
Good luck..
Control Panel (classic view) -> Windows Update -> Review Update History, click on installed updates (blue text at the top)
Find (KB929777), right click and uninstall it. Reboot the computer.
After re-start go to Control Panel -> Check For Updates, (KB929777) should be there. If missing, download from Microsoft Updates website. Install (KB929777).
Reboot and all should be well again.
True, but so are OSX and modern unixes like Fedora 12.
Unfortunately, the user would be out of luck with installing OSX, so I would recommend Linux :-)
Take them out of your computer, hand wash them in a mild soap solution. Do not use detergent as this could permanently reverse the polarity.
Rinse, repeat, then air dry.
Once they are completely dry reinstall them. You computer should then be as good as new!
I do not have this update in my system.
I think I did something really stupid. I was messing around in the admin. settings and I was listed as the admin and do not have a password to get into anything because my computer is at home.
I changed myself from admin to regular user or whatever it was called and now I am unable to change back to admin. It asks me for a password and when I attempted to put one in, it said it was a bad password.
I do not want passwords.
I need some help getting out of that mess, too.
Thanks!
