It is hard to imagine anyone being more “in over his head” for the office he holds than the current occupant of the WO. I am not from TN but the impression I always had of Fred is that he became frustrated with how thing are done in Congress and came to consider it a waste of time in the current political climate.

Whatever his reasons he seemed bored and inattentive during the senate hearings. But like I said his Not Guilty Vote sealed it. If anyone in the senate had the legal knowledge in how to bring down Clinton it was him. Fred had basically faced the Dixie Mafia when he went after Blanton. That's what was so disappointing. He didn't even seem to be trying. When he said "Let the chips fall where they may" that was the Fred Thompson who brought down a criminal governor who was selling pardons. When later he said "Don't name no names" I knew it was over and Fred lost interest.

I think his 2008 run for POTUS was nothing more than to help elect his friend John McCain. Fred distracted votes away from those running against McCain while their funds ran out. His 2008 campaign like his senate career was at best a yawn. IOW I don't think that beyond running interference for McCain in the primaries he was interested in being POTUS. Politically Thompson was like McCain. The Fred Hype was wishful thinking on a lot of peoples part who had very short term memory as well.
