The same line of argument could be used to dictate everybody’s food.
To date, only action could bring about such a tax. Action such as purchasing liquor or tobacco. For the first time, inaction is being used as the basis of a tax.

Fred was in way over his head as a senator. He would have made a great TN attorney general that was as far up in government as he ever needed to go. Politically he was a McCainite. His handling as committee chairman of the hearing on Clinton was very disappointing if not down right disgusting on his part. He went from "Let the chips fall where they may" to "Don't name no names". Added to that a "Not Guilty" vote for Bill Clinton. In short Fred's Senate career was pathetic.
I'll never understand the Fred for Prez craze in here. He couldn't handle himself nor have enough backbone needed as a senator why would anyone think he could be a good POTUS?
To his credit he helped rid Tennessee of an all time worse criminal governor. He likely indirectly prevented one as bad a Blanton from taking his place because of the attention given the office.

One would think. But they passed the bill anyway and we will see what the Supremes have to say about it. If they approve this, then we have no viable constitution left to defend, and changes will have to be made to our society at large, hopefully through the ballot box.
To those that think it impossible to overturn this monstrosity, it took 10 years of fighting to put the brakes on McCain/Finegold and decades fighting for the right to bear arms. Anything can be undone if people have the will to continue fighting...A lot of times it is how within the law the opposition poses their argument. Frist was a poor majority leader and hasn’t changed since he left the senate. But he is rich in moolah...
It is hard to imagine anyone being more “in over his head†for the office he holds than the current occupant of the WO. I am not from TN but the impression I always had of Fred is that he became frustrated with how thing are done in Congress and came to consider it a waste of time in the current political climate.
I think his 2008 run for POTUS was nothing more than to help elect his friend John McCain. Fred distracted votes away from those running against McCain while their funds ran out. His 2008 campaign like his senate career was at best a yawn. IOW I don't think that beyond running interference for McCain in the primaries he was interested in being POTUS. Politically Thompson was like McCain. The Fred Hype was wishful thinking on a lot of peoples part who had very short term memory as well.
Of course not. Lawsuits are only for leftist causes - like snail darters, or slavery reparations. They’re not for making sure that the founding document of our country, the constitution, is followed in letter and spirit.

If so, then there literally is no limit to federal power. What’s to stop feds from giving you a choice between buying a GM car or paying a tax? Eating a government-prescribed diet or paying a tax? Engaging in government-required calisthenics every morning or paying a tax?
The mere fact it is structured as a tax doesn’t make it constitutional, nor does the fact that health insurance (sometimes) crosses state lines and hence is part of interstate commerce.
That’s true about the hearings, but I think Huckabee (who makes my skin crawl) is the one who really helped McCain by staying in the race as long as he did. I did not know enough about Fred’s political career in Tennessee (although I am right next door in NC) to know that he had helped to bring down a governor. Thanks for the info!
Fred Thompson was Marie's defense lawyer. Basically Blanton and cronies tried to lay the blame on her and she was in fact innocent. Thompson was the one who took the governor and his illicit businesses down in court. IIRC Lamar Alexander was sworn in as governor early because they feared Blanton would pardon more before he left office. A Wiki search on Ray Blanton should give you most the details.
