How does one buy votes and why would the Southern Leadership Conference speakers want to attend such a corrupt event?

They buy votes by paying for the tickets. The tickets aren't cheap, I should know, I bought two for my wife and I, and then something came up that we couldn't go.

Because the speakers aren't there primarily for the straw poll, they are there to communicate their policy ideas, to speak, to get noticed, some reasons are honorable, some are self-serving, etc., etc..
