Is the Associated Press just realizing this fact? I wrote about this in 2008 and Rush Limbaugh has had the information on his home page forever. We really are spreading the wealth around when it comes to the federal tax burden in the United States.

The graying of America.

Part of this is that those old people who retire or semi retire have no little or no earned income to pay on.

Fear not, Teleprompter Boy has plans to make them fulfill their duty to die.

Only reinforces, for me, that the Founding Fathers were right.

Only I’ll go a step further, for ...... diversity’s sake ..LOL

Voting should be allowed only to Property Owners, or ... Someone who has Had to Write a CHECK to the IRS!!!

This was the first year hubby and I actually paid in. Our refund was always larger than what we paid in...which was welfare in a way. But we did have deductions for our mortgage, three kids, student loans and home business (just saying that we weren’t intending to mooch, the two of us work three jobs).

Anyway, I actually called my parents to tell them that we were real taxpayers this year. I felt like we really grew up. If more people would take pride in not feeding off others, maybe we could bump this percentage up a bit.

Voting is the wrong angle...we just need to change the tax system.

That is why I like the Fair Tax. It makes the “poor” pay at least some of their fair share...

Does this include all the hidden taxes, like the tax on each gallon of gas?

just because you got a refund doesn't mean you did't pay income taxes....it just means they took too much out....

with 3 kids and stagnant wages, we got a nice refund almost every year until the last 5 or so....just one dependent besides us at home, and our mortage interest is low enough that we can't even itemize so we lose a great deal of deductions such as charity etc....

but look closely at your paychecks...Medicare taxes and SS alone are eating us alive...

thats why I won't be sorry when we start taking out like so many others....

No, this just applies to the Federal Income Tax.

The point remains, though, that it is discouraging that 50% who don't pay FIT get to vote in elections that determine how much the other 50% pay. Doesn't make sense.

Actually, the non-payers tend to be young and single, at lease acc. to the Tax Foundation in 2006:
http://www.taxfoundation.org/news/show/1410.html

Who Are the Non-Payers?
Using IRS data, we are able to create a profile of these individuals who are outside the federal income tax system. As Table 1 shows [see article at link], those who file as single or head-of-household are much more likely to be non-payers. One-third of single filers pay nothing in federal income taxes, and almost two-thirds of those who file as head of household pay nothing. In contrast, just 22 percent of married filers are non-payers.

Why do many single filers face zero tax liability? One reason is that single filers tend to be younger and earn lower incomes than married filers—especially single parents who file as head-of-household. As a result, married taxpayers pay roughly 75 percent of all federal income taxes, despite filing only 40 percent of returns.

Actually, these numbers exclude payroll taxes. So even these guys get a chunk taken out of them.
