What Toyota sales say about the Mainstream Media (MSM)
The Virginian ^ | 4/2/2010 | Moneyrunner

Toyota announced that sales were up 41% for March. Better than Ford, GM, and several other Asian brands. What’s going on? Toyota has been the object of mass media vilification for months. Not only have their cars been accused of causing thousands of accidents and dozens of deaths, the hysterical articles accused the company of not caring if its customers died. Toyota management has been accused of cover-ups and using undue political influence to get special breaks from the NHTSA. Black columnist Bob Herbert accused Toyota of “corporate treachery” for closing its Fremont California plant in the face of declining sales apparently in the belief that the role of a company is to provide jobs and failure to do so is treason.

So we have an image drawn by the MSM (or as Rush Limbaugh likes to refer to them “The state run media”) of Toyota cars being killers, made by treacherous, crooked, fabulously wealthy owners who conspire in secret to maim its customers while laughing at the carnage.

Yet Toyota’s sales are up 41%! Sure, there were incentives, but are you going to get into a death trap just because they will promise to change the oil for a couple of years? After some thought, the American people have concluded that they have been lied to by the MSM about Toyota and they went out and bought them … by the thousands.

What we see here is confirmation of a simple development: not only have the MSM’s editorial positions destroyed their grip on the national discourse (see the success of the Tea Party movement that’s violently opposed by the MSM), but the trust the American people have in their news reporting is also in the crapper.

The sales spike by Toyota is a big “F*** You” to the media that once had the power to destroy the reputation of anyone they chose, either out of spite or simply as collateral damage in their desire to sell newspapers or air time via sensationalism.

You want a measure of media credibility? Look at the Toyota sales numbers and rejoice.

I will quote every middle schooler in the nation when I say this.....

Well. Du-ah!

On the serious side, I am alway thought this was a drummed up charge broght on by none other than the UAW, the Lame Stream Media and the DNC. They went after number 1 and thought that they would get away with it. The American people need to wake up and smell the coffee and start to challenge the media. They go unchecked everyday and will continue to do so until they get caught in a lie so big that they won’t be able to hide it any longer.

I feel like I preaching to the choir, but this Toyota thing as well as all this crap about Tea Partiers shouting the N word just makes me want to barf. The news media picks it up and runs with it without checking it. Then worse of all would NEVER consider a retraction or correction. WAKE UP AMERICA - the media is stealing our country and we are letting them do it.

Really does demonstrate how impotent they've become. Well, maybe more of them will get to do some embedded reporting on the economy from the unemployment office soon. See the Obama economy close up as it were.

Toyota had massive discounts - the biggest in the company's history. Overall, it was a good month for car sales and Ford had about the same percentage of increase without putting nearly as much money “on the hood.”

Toyota coverage is no more damning than Explorer roll-over coverage was a decade ago.

“Toyota coverage is no more damning than Explorer roll-over coverage was a decade ago. “

Explorer didn’t have a full assault by a Marxist gov’t paying back unions then. It is much worse for ANY private business now, particularly those who don’t bow to union thugs.

Its great to see that American’s understand that Toyota is a good product and will be there if you have a problem. That Obummer couldn’t destroy the brand to prop up his Gov Motors cars or Chrysler.

I’m sure “Dear Leader”; state run media; the UAW and the Car Czar are already working on the next “problem”. Let the hearings begin!!!!!

I liked the bit about Toyota closing the Fremont plant. That plant (NUMMI) was a joint venture between GM and Toyota, and closed after GM pulled out of the joint venture....

You're not preaching to the choir. Those millions of loyal Toyota owners and thousands of new buyers tell you that the MSM has lost it's death grip on the American mind.

And, as Martha Stewart would say, “that’s a good thing.”

Check the links on my original story (at Blogger). Yes, they did have incentives. But are you going to buy a lousy car that will kill you for a sales incentive?

Toyota never had much in the way of incentives before so calling them "the biggest in the company's history" is not saying much.

They are made like shit. Repairs are costly and we cannot afford it. My husband was ripped off at Berger Family Dealership in Hazleton PA a few weeks ago. They charged him 600.00 for a chip system and knew the car was not fully fixed. A week later another check engine light came on and he took it back and they told him another 2K to fix. I am reporting them next week to every agency on the planet including OBAMA BIN LAUDEN.

Related question, given that the Fed Government owns a big stake in GM, why isn’t there any uproar being made about the conflict of interest that has arisen because of Obama’s new announced federal mileage standards???

Make the case that GM HAS ALREADY TAPPED TAXPAYER FUNDS to meet those new standards. Contrary to Obama’s claim, this is anti-competitive. Get people thinking about the very dangerous and unsatisfactory situation we have with government intruding into the private sector.

This is still up in the air. Haven't seen where fraud has been charged in any case. Toyota and NHTSA have been aware of reports since 2004 and done nothing other than recalling floormats and adding a shim. This may not be as big as the MSM makes it, but it needs to be addressed and corrected if there is an uncontrolled acceleration problem
