They may be “converted” after a few neighbors are murdered by bandits. And that still leaves the widows etc. unarmed.

Not all the people I would consider arming in a serious SHTF situation are capable of owning a firearm in ordinary circumstances, nor would I consider arming them in ordinary circumstances.

There are a very few whom I would trust whom, because of long past actions, society does not. In a survival situation where arming someone I would not otherwise consider giving a firearm to increases the chances of our mutual survival, it would be really nice to have that option.
