Mulvaney Moves Up in 'Young Guns' Program

State Sen. Mick Mulvaney (R), who is challenging House Budget Chairman John Spratt (D), will be promoted today to the second-highest level of the National Republican Congressional Committee's "Young Guns" fundraising and campaign infrastructure program.

The move to name Mulvaney as one of 22 "Contender" candidates comes ahead of what committee officials expect to be a strong first-quarter fundraising report.

When he entered the race in October, Mulvaney's deep pockets were viewed as an attractive campaign asset. In the fourth quarter, he loaned himself $75,000, which helped him show more campaign receipts than Spratt for the three-month period.

Spratt, a 14-term Member, has yet to file for re-election. A Spratt spokesman said the House's busy voting schedule has kept him from filing but that "he's hoping to file Friday." The deadline is March 30.

CQ Politics rates this contest Leans Democratic.

This race is worthy of your attention.

Losing the Budget Committee Chairman's seat will be a great defeat for House leadership and give Democrats who remain after November much to consider when called on to support them.

I’m not a big fan of the NRCC after the way they threw my congressman under the bus and cost us the seat last time but they have moved him up to contender status now that he’s running to retake the seat.

Seems that they are paying at least some attention now.

I’m calling it a likely pickup.

Cripplecreek,

Looking good for your guy Walberg.

Things seem to be moving in Mulvaney’s direction as well.

Good Luck to both of them.
