Send in Bomber Beazley

This week, I have learned why Kim Beazley was one of Australia’s best defence minsters. His biographer Peter FitzSimons explained on ABC TV that Beazley, as a trained historian, had this view: “I know that the logic of history, to large land masses populated by a small number of people surrounded by cultures alien to them, is very cruel. I don’t accept that Australia will necessarily be like that. But we have choices. And it is the choices we make now that will determine whether Australia will survive in 2050.”

What is so remarkable about Kim Beazley's view of Australia is that right now the country is in grave danger of making a wrong choice which will greatly endanger our population well before 2050.

Two weeks ago I explained that it seemed that the Joint Strike Fighter on which Australia is basing its air defence is going to be vastly inferior to the updated version of Russia’s Sukhoi – the so called ‘PAK-FA T-50’ which will be supplied to India, China and Indonesia.

This week Sam Roggeveen, editor of the Lowy Institute Publication The Interpreter, responded and given that he was a senior strategic analyst in Australia's peak intelligence agency, the Office of National Assessments, I expected him to give me a hard time.

Good article overall. Even if what he says about the PAK-FA T-50 against the F-35 is true I dont know what much other choices Australia has right now, except maybe to get in the market for PAK-FA T-50’s.

Why don't you post the entire article for those who would rather not register with foreign websites? It is not on the FR excerpt list.

Business Spectator is an excellent site. I learn loads from it that I can’t find elsewhere. No spam, just a daily link with top stories.

Australia could have bought F-15Es to replace their retiring F-111Cs, instead of the F/A-18F that they did buy.
