NHTSA Petitions ‘Sensitive’ Toyota Owners for Complaints. Good Idea? Vote…

Some Toyota owners have begun complaining that their vehicles suddenly accelerated even after dealerships made repairs to fix the problem, according to reports filed with federal safety regulators.

Now the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is asking the public for reports.

“If Toyota owners are still experiencing sudden acceleration incidents after taking their cars to the dealership, we want to know about it,” the agency’s administrator, David Strickland, said in a statement.

However, these reports could be a result of heightened sensitivity among Toyota drivers given the intense media attention to this issue. "Being aware of the problem, I drive defensively," said one Toyota owner.

Government goes fishing.

Interesting they don’t ask about other car companies, like GM.

Toyota cars are equipped with an Electronic Data Recorder (EDR) that most certanily captured throttle position information in any airbag deployment crash.

From the EDR, Toyota would see what the throttle and brake positions were at the time of an accident.

My money is on the throttle position sensor being noisy or intermittent.

It would behoove Toyota to be forthcoming with specific information regarding the way the computer can influence acceleration and ways that the public can use to regain control. I am still not sure if the event or anomaly is even possible, but Toyota should know and get the info out. If it isn’t electronically possible, we know where the problem lies.

An AP story today identifies a couple drivers and their stories of how the problem is still there after it had been “fixed”. The poor quality on these overrated riceburners may finally get fully exposed.

You can’t fix this problem in the shop.
