I distinctly remember reading at the time, that McVeigh and his accomplice had been in the Phillipines and were befriended and influenced by Muslim extremists. It didn’t get any more press.

McVeigh’s accomplice Terry Nichols would travel to Quezon City in the Phillipines, while his Phillipino wife stayed back in the states. He stayed there at the same time as Ramsih Yusef and his uncle Khalid Sheik Mohammed (KSM) were also present in Quezon City. Nichols did not know how to assemble the OKC bomb until after he returned from the Phillipines. I believe that OKC was Al Qaeda’s second attack on the US.

I remember that too, but frankly I didn’t believe it - it sounded at the time like they were engineering the story but decided to go a different direction.
