No one ever said they were smart. At that, the general consensus is they are idiots. However, the video is clear. You can see the Japanese ship going pretty much in a straight line and the smaller vessel accelerate (based on the wake) right into the larger ship.

You are right, sort of. The video clearly shows that the little few-ton racing vessel actually ran in front of the huge steel-hulled vessel, and was run over.
A little passenger car isn't going to just run into a train, but sometimes they stupidly drive in front of trains and the trains hit them. And everybody knows it's not the train's fault.
Doing stupid things and hoping your opponent will do anything to not harm you isn't a wise strategy, especially if you know your opponend has replaced the whalers (who you seem to villify, but who the article clearly states would do almost anything NOT to harm the terrorists) with security people who seem much less concerned with protecting you from your own stupidity.
Key word here: RACING vessel. The eco-terrorists had the faster and more maneuverable vessel. It chose to get in the way of the bigger vessel. From the video I saw, they seemed to have been trying to deploy something out the back of the Gil, perhaps something to lay in the path of the Jap ship and foul its propellers. They played chicken with a bigger ship, and they lost.
