Ergo, WND concluded, Obama must be devoting that entire $1.7 million to crushing birthers in court. This is a ridiculous claim: Even after an election is over a presidential campaign has plenty of need for lawyers as it winds down operations and meets campaign finance law requirements.

I found the above statement interesting.

I wish the author would explain in more detail about the work that high-priced lawyers would need to do for Obama AFTER the campaign was over, and why the high-priced lawyers would present such big bills to Obama or to his campaign after the campaign was over. Just food for thought.

A while back I checked the FEC reports, to ascertain that at least a major portion of the Perkins-Coie legal fees were for work on ‘eligibility’ suits. Similarly, I looked up legal fees for the McCain campaign for the same periods.

What stuck out was that through the entire campaign (2007 - 2008), Perkins-Coie collected approximately $1M in legal fees. From the election through October 2009 they collected $1.7M.

McCain’s campaign disbursed no more than $100K in legal fees for the same post-election through October 2009 periods.

Certainly, there are legitimate campaign-related legal expenses that survive long after votes are cast and counted, and swearings-in take place. But not to the tune of $100K+/month.
