Its just a practical question of volume of information. As an example, from 50 years ago you have 50 more years of information, and just think for a minute what has happened in the last 50 years. The point is, that school should not just be a place to learn a compendium of facts and then you'll know what you need to get through life. School (and home for that matter) are places that prepare you for adulthood. You learn facts of course but you should also learn the importance of learning, and thinking, and that learning and thinking should never stop.
