One of the most dangerous affronts to world peace came in late 2007, when the US intelligence report claiming that Iran stopped its nuke program in 2003. Pundits from all over yelled and screamed that it was a politically based interpretation of the facts and/or major blunder. Even our allies were angry, Britain said we were duped:
The phone in the Iranian Nuclear Plant rang, "Hey Achmeed" said the voice on one end, " I just want you to know we are shutting down the Nuclear Weapons program." "Yes Ibrihem," said the other voice, "I know, and if the phone is tapped by the CIA make sure you guys listen---we have stopped our nuclear weapons program."
According to the London Telegraph it may have been conversations like the fictitious one above, that helped dupe the United States that Iran "mothballed" its nuke program. Quoting sources within British intelligence
A senior British official delivered a withering assessment of US intelligence-gathering abilities in the Middle East and revealed that British spies shared the concerns of Israeli defense chiefs that Iran was still pursuing nuclear weapons.....
The timing of the CIA report has also provoked fury in the British Government, where officials believe it has undermined efforts to impose tough new sanctions on Iran and made an Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities more likely....
The Washington Times is reporting that two years after that startling national intelligence estimate announcement, our spy agencies have changed their mind, they are working on a new report that will essentially say, "oops never mind." Iran NEVER stopped their nuclear weapons program in 2003.

this “National Intelligence Estimate” was clearly fictional, with only political aims, designed to hurt Bush and give fodder to the MSM talking heads. No surprises there.
The authors of that NIE report should be publicly identified, dragged out of their academic hiding places, tarred, feathered, carried across the Potomac on rails, and deposited in the Lorton landfill.
(Somebody here on FR has named the authors. But I can’t find the thread.)
The wonderful thing about this if a real investigation is commissioned is that these reports have a paper trail and a chain of custody because of the security regulations in place to track this stuff internally. So now the question will be asked is who will be the one to out the lie and have the evidence to prove it?
oops. Sorry about that. Cut and past gone wild.
When the NIE came out saying that Iran had stopped their nuke weapons program, I wondered if “W” dictated that conclusion so that he wouldn’t be obliged to take action in the last year of his Presidency. His failure to act on Iran was my biggest disappointment of his administration.
everytime some lib starts yappin about wmd and valerie plame I say STFU, and send them this link from their favorite lib news network..

The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein’s nuclear program a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium reached a Canadian port Saturday to complete a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a ship voyage crossing two oceans.
The removal of 550 metric tons of “yellowcake” the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment was a significant step toward closing the books on Saddam’s nuclear legacy. It also brought relief to U.S. and Iraqi authorities who had worried the cache would reach insurgents or smugglers crossing to Iran to aid its nuclear ambitions.
NIE authors were:
Thomas Fingar, Vann Van Diepen and Kenneth Brill
And it was just a few months after the congress passed a bill by wide margins branding Iran’s revolutionary guards a terrorist organization — one of the key votes that Clinton and Obama split on (with Obama of course taking the position of defending Iran).
I think some here miss the resounding message that this article implies or infers: Our intelligence gathering, assessment, and production of national security estimates/assessments/reports are being POLITICALLY tainted, thus, inherently jeopardizing not only our national security initiatives but our foreign policy initiatives, which in turn, further place and jeopardize all of us.
Of course it’s being tainted politically. Also it looks like the timing is being dictated by Obama — now that his “engagement” policy has totally and utterly failed, it’s time to switch gears (at least a little bit).
