I always understood that phrase to mean “I’m about to lie to you now...”
He could at least have ripped off Nixon correctly, “Let me perfectly clear...”
May Dad always taught me that when somebody starts a sentence with, “To be honest...”, you know they aren’t.
Richard Nixon used to start his answers to the press with an almost identical phrase. I always had the sense that he was lying, too. When someone keeps saying, “Let me be clear,” it has to be because he knows he is being dishonest.
Let your yes be yes, and your no be no.
John Kerry (who served in Vietnam) remember his “let me be clear, crystal clear” stunt?
