It was an interesting period of time and may or may not prove something about American's gullibility to be seduced by leftist lyrics. For one thing the absorption of the overt lefty political songs into the American mainstream proved the ineffecuality of the hard-core lefties. Most Americans were capable of assessing the worth of the music minus the political rhetoric. That's because most Americans dislike overt political messages from whatever political source in their popular music. They just want to hum the tune.
In short, if the tune was good, it was a good song. What were those lyrics about anyway? Oh yeah, something about shoddily-constructed tract houses (Malvina Reynolds "Little Boxes." So what? Even hard righties like myself can laugh at the sameness of the houses without ascribing to the so-called message. I still play Seeger's songs on my guitar for fun. People have always been able to detach the music from the message.

Long essay but well worth the effort to read it.

Mrs. JimRed and I have been invited to attend a winter folk festival later this month with her best friend and her husband. She was not amused when I commented about the undesirables we’d have to rub shoulders with.
