Texas loses offensive swagger after injury to McCoy

Colt McCoy had fallen early to injury leaving the Texas offense in shambles. True freshman QB Garrett Gilbert stepped into the harsh spotlight of the biggest game in college football and looked like a freshman ought to look when thrown into that situation; scared and shaky.

Could be. Live by the sword; die by the sword. Mack Brown’s compensation package was certainly more generous than Saban’s.

I disagree that TX had a poor performance and Bama had a good performance. TX D had 5 sacks against the Bama O line and TX only gave up 1 sack. Bama was also held by the TX D, especially during the second half (only 2 first downs until the Gilber fumble).
Bama beat the Gators by 19 and could only beat a TX team, quarterbacked by a true freshman, by 16 and most of the Bama points were due to turnovers by the freshman QB. If McCoy had been in, I think the Tide would have lost by a few touchdowns. Look at the first two drives; TX was averaging 5.6yds per carry under Colt and only 1.2yds per carry under the freshman. TX most likely would have scored on its first two possession under Colt, rather than settling for a field goal.
TX O line dominated the Alabama D line (hence the lack of sacks or hurries) and TX D line dominated the Bama O line (hence the sacks). TX even had a good running game against Bama. The TX receivers had two opportunities to score in the first half (one by Shipley and one by Williams in the end-zone), but the freshman over-threw the ball. The TX receivers were stuffing the Bama safeties and corners on most plays, but the freshman just couldn’t get them the ball accurately. TX special teams also dominated Bama with the Bama fake punt interception and the on-side kick recovery.
Based on the stats and just watching the game, TX dominated Bama, besides the QB position. Bama only got the last TDs because of the fumble by the QB and a late interception by the QB, both of which would not have happened under McCoy. The shovel pass was also a rookie mistake and wouldn’t have occurred under McCoy.
Now I’m not blaming Gilbert because that is just too much to expect from a true freshman, but I was impressed with him bringing TX to within 3 points until the last 4 minutes of the game. However, I still think that with McCoy, TX would have won because TX just played better overall.

Your history is wrong. Stallings wasn’t fired. He retired to spend more time with his Down’s Syndrome son because he knew his life would be shortened.

That was the public story, but not the truth.

There is a lot of merit to your analysis, but ultimately I believe that once Alabama got control of the offensive line assignments, the Tide had the advantage, regardless. No question that these were excellent teams. BTW, as for personal preferences, I’m a Virginia resident whose alma mater, Old Dominion, just fielded a football team for the first time since the 30s. No dog in the Bama-Texas fight; I do enjoy a good game.

He moved the arm immediately after having been hit. He moved it in the movement of clapping as he brought his hands together. So he could move the arm. If he can move it like that would think he could still throw.

I am basing this on what I saw and observed, pyshical evidence here, not speculation.

The speculation is that he was really hurt, that is what I can't prove.

Others may be able to prove this, but the evidence wasn't really shown well to us.

I am questioning whether he was really hurt, yes. We didn't see him make any motion trying to simulate a throw after the hit.

Would think he would make at least one simulated throwing motion with his arm and grimace in pain if he was hurt. We or I at least didn't see that.

Had he continued playing I think he would have been capable of leading the team to victory.

Alabama's secondary was much weaker looking than I expected them to be in the game.

I saw Texas widereceivers open all game.

Apparently, it was a nerve injury that didn’t so much hurt as literally rendered him incapable of using the arm:

Not to take anything away from Alabama, but I agree with you on that point.
