Why it costs more to be a woman (gag this airhead with a spoon, please)

From haircuts to health insurance, moisturizers to mortgages, women are charged more than men for essentially the same stuff. There's only 1 way to fight this bunk.

The January issue of Consumer Reports just came in the mail, and what I found on Page 8 shocked me. There were two bottles of Nivea body wash: one for men priced at $5.49 and one for women costing $7.49.

Why the 2-buck difference? Nivea's reason, according to Consumer Reports senior editor Tod Marks, is that the women's product is made with "skin-sensation technology," which makes it more expensive.

I tried to imagine a bigger load of bunk. I failed.

They make moisturizers for men? I would hope there is not much of a market for things like that.

Although I do have to admit that a hot hydraulic shower leaves the skin soft to the touch.

I remember the report being very interesting and it was on essentials not dumb stuff. In NYC, people dry clean a lot. Or use a laundry service. For the most part, it didn't apply to anyone outside a big city.

I'm careful not to buy clothes that need to be dry cleaned too. D-i-L just had one dress and one mens suit jacket cleaned for a wedding this weekend. $43. Outrageous.

Guys that work outside in the wind and sun need a moisturizer too but don’t want to smell like flowers ya know?

“leave out the ‘fancy’ stuff and just dress and do our hair like you guys. That’ll be cheaper. You won’t like it,...”

I’ll like it, if you’ll just do it and shut up about it. It’s the Dunleavey-ish whining that annoys.

I grew up on a farm. Put myself through school working landscape. Back on a farm now and can spend 14 hours strait on an open tractor depending on season.

I am proud to say that other than some chapstick, I’ve never needed a moisturizer. Are men suffering from some medical condition that makes them wilt in the sun?

If you are going to start talking about how guy liner makes operating heavy equipment safer, I’m out of here.

Why do women's haircuts cost more than men's?

Umm...I don't know....maybe its because women generally HAVE MORE HAIR THAN MEN!

Boy clothes are a lot cheaper. I have boy-girl twins. Until they were about 10 I dressed them both out of the boys’ department, except for occasions, of course.

The boy jeans were always more durable and cost at least 25% less. Same thing on sweat shirts, T shirts, etc. They were plain, modest, more durable, and cheaper.

LOL!! Nope. No guy liner. Hubby’s hands chap in the winter. Actually, his fingers get splits in them from being dry.

My current squeeze is 50 years old and age has been kind to her. She has a natural beauty about her. She doesn’t wear makeup or lather all manner of exotic junk on herself. She can most often be seen wearing Levi’s and a nice top or teeshirt without looking cheap or like a biker chic.

If we decide some morning to cruise over to the coast, I don’t have to wait for her to primp or moan about what to wear for an hour or two. She doesn’t wear jewlery.

She’s comfortable in her own skin. She’s educated and makes pretty good money as a consultant, a job she doesn’t have to dress up for.

She gets thru life just fine without having to put on the dog.

I think most women put themselves in a position of having to spend more due to their own lifestyle choices. Oh, did I mention she’s trained to leave the toilet seat up?

I wish I’d seen the report. The author of this article has an agenda, but she does have some valid points about costs of services/goods to women.

Even here in flyover country the cost of dry cleaning is high. It’s not an expense I’m willing to bear weekly, but I know people who have all their jeans and washable dress pants done at the cleaners. The crisp crease is worth it to them.

Haha, little you know about what goes on at the Gynie’s.

I am grateful I don’t have one though. ;) That would be one for Springer.

I’m sure that if any woman patronized my barber and asked for a #2 cut on the sides and a light trim on top, blocked in the back, she’d get charged the same amount as I do. I do wish I could find a barber that’s not afraid to shave the back of my neck with a straight razor, though.

From haircuts to health insurance, moisturizers to mortgages, women are charged more than men for essentially the same stuff.

If its the same stuff, then buy it in the Men's section and go to a barber.

Any woman who sits down in a barber's chair and asks for a high taper - #3 will pay the same exact amount as a man. Women complaining about hair cut costs is classic liberal BS. A man sits down and 5 minutes later gets up and pays the tab. A woman sits down and an hour later wonders how much longer it might be. You are paying a labor charge, so don't be shocked that longer costs more.

As for personal care products, women are willing to pay more than men. A man (hetro) wouldn't even consider paying $25 for a small tube of cream (unless it cured a bad rash). Many women think nothing of it.

We live in a rural area outside NYC. Farm country. I couldn't believe the price of dry cleaning. Outrageous is mild.

It's too bad that this author let their agenda get in the way of honest consumer investigation.

It seems to me that the report included something about car repair and a woman paid more for the same repair but it's been years ago.

I very much doubt that you'd like it. Viola! Man's haircut, men's clothes...who knows what else.

Well, I guess we’ll leave out the ‘fancy’ stuff and just dress and do our hair like you guys. That’ll be cheaper. You won’t like it, but it’ll be cheaper.

After 45 years of observing the females in action, I am certain of one thing. Women do not make themselves up to impress men. Women primp and dress to impress and compete with other women. Men are just observers.

If you want to see a woman without makeup and dressed down, tell her that she'll be the only woman there.

“Umm...I don’t know....maybe its because women generally HAVE MORE HAIR THAN MEN!”

There’s that other thing about a woman’s haircut generally taking up 3 times the length of a man’s haircut. If anything, many a woman gets a discount if workers are paid on an hourly basis.

$25! This woman won't pay that. I buy Suave! Or Equate, WalMarts brand. I don't need a fancy name on my face grease.

When I was in my 30's and wore my hair short, I did go to the local barber. Got a scissor cut. $5.
