The Big Lie Behind the Senate's Cadillac Health Care Tax--It Screws the Middle Class
The Lid/NY Times ^ | 12/30/09 | The Lid

A major component of the Senate Obamacare bill is the 40% tax on "Cadillac" health plans. The bill defines Cadillac plans as any health insurance policy costing more than $8,500 (for an individual) and $23,000 (for a family).

The contention is that the tax is the element of the plan that will "bend the cost curve downward" A Dec. 22 Washington Post editorial praised the Cadillac tax as "an essential element of the package." Political reported that a letter to the White House signed by 23 distinguished economists said it is "critical" because it "offers the most promising approach to reducing private-sector health care costs."

Even if these projections are correct and the Cadillac tax reduces government costs, there is the effect of the Cadillac tax that no one in the Democratic Party controlled Senate is willing to tell the public about, the major tax burden increase on the middle class. Within the first six years of the plan 20% of families earning between $50,000 and $75,000 annually will be paying the Cadillac tax (but didn't the President say no one lest than $250,000.....?).

Can someone please tell me if the 40% is applied to the ENTIRE cost of the plan, or just the amount above the trigger points (i.e., $8,500 or $23,000)? No one in the MSM seems to care (or more likely understand, since it does involve math). Thanks.

Ironic that when Hillary tried to force her health care plan, the big villans were employers who did not - or could not afford to - provide coverage for their employees (remember her quote: “I can’t be responsible for every under-capitalized enterprise...”)

This time around, the villans are the companies who provide TOO MUCH coverage...

Does this make any sense?

it’s not supposed to. Read up on Hitler and Stalin. The current socialist party in the White House uses same tactics as the Marxists...mainly confuse and accuse others of what they do. Kinda simple. They are liars and have no morals whatsoever.

You can bet that the Union Cadillac Plans will be exempt. The truly cadillac plans are in the various Unions. They will certainly be exempt. When will the 80% of workers not in a Union start a rebellion?

They don’t care because all they see is so-called rich people being soaked and that’s enough for them.

Of COURSE, though, there’s an overriding exemption to the new taxes, regardless of how generouse the person’s health plan is, if that person’s household income doesn’t exceed $250,000 per year, right?

Because Obama expressly promised that no tax hikes of any kind would occur for folks not making more than $250k/year. Right?

Right?

Also, do the numbers $8500 and $23000 mean what the individual pays, or does it also include what the employer (or ex-employer for retirees) pays? The employer's part of the total cost could easily be 2X what the employee pays.

I don’t have a problem with taxing employer provided health benefits (or any other employer provided benefits) in concept ... separate from this bill.

Employer provided Insurance benefits are a form of income and should have been taxed as income from the get go (as long as we have income tax).

If we had done this from the beginning, or better yet, had everyone bought their own insurance rather than gatekeep insurance through employment, neither health insurance or health care would be as expensive as it is today and wages would be higher.

As usual, the usual suspects, want something for nothing.
