Hmmm, I thought everyone that had income had to file. Tell me, without filing, how do they know how much your income was?

Read the IRS tax publications. You have to have a minimum amount of income to meet the requirement to file. That is how all those poor people get by without paying or filing. My last two years before not filing I was working for a company and made over 60 K each year. Then went 5 years without enough income to file. Was doing the starving writers gig. All legal. All legit.
