Difference is, voters were not against those programs at the time.
0bamacare on the other hand, is adamantly opposed by most voters right now, by nearly 2:1.
BIG DIFFERENCE!
The only other bill in the history of this country, that voters were totally against, which the congress then forced on voters (by the same Democrats), was the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854.
The result?
Why, in the 1854-55 elections the Democrats got slaughtered. The Democrats went went from a 159-71 majority in the congress, to a stunning defeat in which they were turned into a minority of 83(Democrats)-108 (Republican) margin. That is a swing of a massive 76 seats against the Democrats.
After that, the Democrats didn't win a majority of House seats for the next 20 years!
The Democrats have just sewn the seeds for their own destruction, and they will live to bitterly regret this outrage.

“voters were not against those programs at the time.”
Are you sure about that? I recall my grandparents saying many were, that there was no Constitutional establishment for a welfare state. They were poor at the time but knew any penny given to the government was a penny from their pockets.
