Wikipedia claims that Russell had never claimed to know Greek, but in two different books I read on Jehovah’s Witnesses quoted from the court transcript of a libel trial in Canada where he claimed on the stand that he could read Greek, then recanted when the attorney handed him some Greek text and asked him to read it out loud. He was a con man.
