Emblems of Audacity: Obama's Emotional Leakage

During Barack Obama’s campaign stop last week in Allentown, Pennsylvania, he scratched his head with his middle finger as he named the mayor of Bethlehem, John Callahan, a Hillary Clinton supporter.

Right before the 2008 election, presidential candidate Barack Obama made a remark about his opponent, John McCain. As he made the remark, Obama scratched his face with his middle finger. Rush Limbaugh and others were quick to ask if Obama was giving the finger to Senator McCain.

Dr. Anna Salter’s research on sexual predators gives us some clues as to why we are so often unable to spot a liar. Although her work is focused on deviants, her findings about deception detection are easily generalized to generic liars.

Some of Salter’s most interesting work is her study of emotional leakage. Understand that there are no reliable behavioral cues of deception. However, if the emotional content of the lie is sufficiently high, there is the risk of emotional leakage. That is, the emotion associated with the words unconsciously leaks out.

Dr. Salter describes “emblems” as “gestures that are self-explanatory within a given culture and do not require words for interpretation.” If the gesture is made consciously, say, for example, flashing the peace sign, there is no deception.

If there is deception, the gesture will be unconscious. Thus, the gesture may be only part of a complete gesture. The middle finger is one of the emblems that commonly leaks out.

The greatest Christmas decoration ever?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

"Good news is that I truly out did myself this year with my Christmas decorations. The bad news is that I had to take him down after 2 days. I had more people come screaming up to my house than ever.Great stories. But two things made me take it down.

First, the cops advised me that it would cause traffic accidents as they almost wrecked when they drove by.

Second, a 55 year old lady grabbed the 75 pound ladder almost killed herself putting it against my house and didn't realize it was fake until she climbed to the top (she was not happy). By the way, she was one of many people who attempted to do that. My yard couldn't take it either. I have more than a few tire tracks where people literally drove up my yard."

I’ve never seen anyone scratch himself with the pad of a straight extended finger. People usually scratch with the fingernails, with the fingers curled slightly. I don’t think Hussein made that gesture unconsciously, either. He always pauses his speech, stretches the middle finger, and does his childish thing. Very deliberate

When my daughter lived near Waco, a neighbor did that and we thought it was hilarious.

I got trapped on my two story roof one time [long story] and needed help to get down, so I can understand people's reactions, lol.

Thought I’d told you that story long ago. Will have to tell in a letter as it’s long complicated!

I’ve never been up a ladder at my house. You know how accident prone I can be. My decorations show through my window, and I’m toasty warm putting them up.

Went to Walmart late this afternoon, and came out to a snowy car. I thought it wasn’t going to snow til Wed. Now I’m in the Christmas mood.

Lol, I know, I know! You don’t use ladders to ‘come down’ either, snicker.

Texas had snow Friday the 4th and you get it today. This “earth cooling” thing is very interesting...

Every day I see what the last glacier left behind. No climate change freak can ever answer my question of how the glacier melted. I hope it doesn’t come back. Summers here are beautiful.

You have the coolness that keeps the grass, trees and flowers fresh and green. I have the Texas 100* heat and the big water bills, lol.
