The latest Rasmussen poll shows some numbers that may startle outsiders to Arizona's political scene.
A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely 2010 Republican Primary voters in Arizona finds the longtime incumbent in a virtual tie with potential challenger J.D. Hayworth. McCain earns 45% of the vote, while Hayworth picks up 43%.
Hayworth, a harsh critic of McCain on immigration policy who doggedly attacks the senior Senator over his many breaks with conservative ideology most afternoons and evenings on his highly rated Phoenix talk show, has not yet announced his candidacy. In the interest of disclosure, I'm a big fan of Hayworth, who I believe is a version of his idol, Ronald Reagan. He skewers leftists both locally and nationally, is extremely articulate and witty, and has unchallengeable conservative credentials.
Hayworth a conservative former U.S. congressman who now is a popular radio talk show host in Phoenix, is reportedly interested in the race but has not formally declared for it. He captures 59% of the male GOP vote, while McCain wins 58% of female voters...
74% of likely GOP Primary voters have at least a somewhat favorable opinion of McCain, including 35% who view him very favorably. Twenty-four percent (24%) regard him somewhat or very unfavorably.
Hayworth is viewed favorably by 67%, with 37% very favorable. Only 16% regard the ex-congressman somewhat or very unfavorably. But 16% dont know enough about Hayworth to venture even a soft opinion of him.
Hayworth's forum and his activity in various local events like the Tea Parties will give him ample opportunity to make himself known to those who haven't yet paid attention. The following finding should be even more unnerving to McCain....

If she does, she’s toast to me. I dislike McCain more than I like her. And I like her a lot.
Not much difference, really. Weather guy needs more skills.
[[As an Arizonan (unlike some others here), I think McCain considers his job Senator for Life. He really wants to be the Ted Kennedy of the west.]]
True- You Arizonans need to throw that bum out of office- He’s abotu as trustworthy as John “I can;’t seem to ever tell the truth” Kerry (who has just flip-flopped again on the war in Afghanistan). The sooner the two faced senator has to look for work in his local newspaper, the better.
Jeff Flake is a better choice to replace McCain IMHO.
Sic him, J. D. . . .good boy!
Jeff Flake wouldn’t stand a chance; he falls behind in both money and name recognition by a large margin. JD, at least, has a mic for three hours a day.
I listen to JD every afternoon.
There could be no better man to go and castrate McCain and send him packing next election cycle.
Like politicians, a political party is a tool. To think otherwise is to give them too much credit and to pummel them when they don’t work they way you want is childish and ineffective.
When you’re only one in a million, you exercise power the only way you can.
Possibly, but I doubt “acting out” will get very far.
Choose, Bob. McCain or Hayworth. Quit effing with me and tell me where you stand. Pick one. No third choice.
Local radio doesn’t get any better than John David Hayworth. If he declares, he’s in the Senate.
My consolations to “Sweet Mary”, but his nation needs him.
You’re missing my point which is all politicans are flawed, the only consideration is what flaws are you willing to accept?
Do you accept Hayworths selling out of conservative principles for tribal largesse and political expediancy? Because if you do it would make you a hypocrite to decry it in others.
It’s not a question of whether they are a political whore, it’s which political whore will get you the most bang for your buck. As for Arizona, I don’t know because it isn’t my district or state.
I have to decide, in the next few months, “who can win.” This is what I was talking about in that other thread. Three years out, I have the luxury of whom I like. This close, I need to deal with who can win. Simcox is a walking, talking joke, and that’s all we have to take out McCain.
If McCain wins the primary for Senate, no vote from me. OK?
You know my mantra, work like hell for your candidate in he primaries then support whom more closely reflects your ideals and can win.
If McCain were to get the nod, a vote for him could be rationalized “I’m not retreating, I’m reloading”.
OK. You did say you don’t know AZ politics....
Oh, BTW, you sound like a follower, not a leader. “Whatever the rest of the voters decide.”
Ya, those “rest of the voters. If we could just get rid of them we’d win EVERYTIME!
Lead, don’t follow. That’s what we learned in the classes you set up.
